2018

December

Weather as Recorded at the UMass Cranberry Station:

East Wareham

Unlike last year, December 2018 was slightly warmer than average in temperature and dry.  The temperature averaged 34.8 degrees, 0.5 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature was 59.0 degrees on the 21st; a minimum temperature of 9.1 degrees was recorded on the 9th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 43.2 degrees, 0.5 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 26.5 degrees, 0.3 degrees above the norm.

Precipitation totaled 3.46 inches, 1.07 inches below normal.  We recorded 6 days with more than 0.1 inches of rain. The largest rainfall was 1 inch on the 29th.  Total rainfall for 2018 was 62.23 inches, 12.19 inches above the average for East Wareham and 6.51 inches more than the total rainfall for 2017. Therefore, 2018 was a wet year.  There was no snowfall recorded in December. The long-term average snowfall for the month of December in East Wareham is 6.98 inches.

Sunshine for the month (recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory) was above average, totaling 59% of possible, 11 points above the norm.  There were 11 days with 90% or greater sunshine hours and 6 days with no sunshine at all. 

November

East Wareham

November was below average in temperature, very wet, and below average sunshine.  The temperature averaged 42 degrees, 2.14 degrees below normal.  Maximum temperature was 72 degrees on the 1st; a minimum temperature of 12 degrees was recorded on the 23rd.  Prior to this minimum temperature, a hard-killing frost had been recorded on the 14th with a temperature of 27 degrees. Daytime high temperatures averaged 50 degrees, 2.4 degrees below the norm.  Nighttime temperatures averaged 34 degrees, 1.3 degrees below the norm.  November 2018 average temperature was cooler than that in November 2017 and was below the 30-year average for the month.  

Precipitation totaled 9.04 inches, 4.36 inches above normal.  Measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or more was recorded on 7 days.  The largest single day rainfall was recorded on the 10th of the month (2.01 inches). A total of 1.2 inches of snowfall was recorded for the month of November in East Wareham.  The average snowfall for November in East Wareham is 1.0 inch.

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 36% of the possible, 11 points below long-term average.  There were 5 days with 90% or more sunshine, and 11 days with no sunshine. 

 

October

October had an average temperature almost the same as the long-term average for the month, below average sunshine hours and above average rainfall.  The temperature averaged 52.48 degrees, 0.2 degrees per day below average for October.  Maximum temperature of 78.0 degrees was recorded on the 10th; a minimum temperature of 27.0 degrees was recorded on the 26th. Daytime high temperatures averaged 61.06 degrees, 8.1degrees below October 2017 and 0.74 degrees lower than the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 43.9 degrees, 0.2 degrees above the norm. This October is a departure from the past 8 years in which average temperatures where consistently warmer than the 30-year average. 

Sunshine totaled 40% of the possible sunshine hours, 15 points below the norm.  The Blue Hills observatory had 8 days that were mostly clear (at least 80% of possible) and 6 days with no sunshine.  There was only one day with fog in East Wareham this month.

Precipitation totaled 6.57 inches, 2.43 inches above the 30-year average.  The largest rainfall came on the 12th, 2.02 inches.  Measurable rain was recorded on 11 days, 8 days of which had rainfall of 0.10 inches or greater. Year-to-date rainfall for 2018 is 50.66 inches; 5.15 inches above average for East Wareham.

September

September was warm with below average sunshine and about average precipitation for the month.  The temperature averaged 67.54°, 4.45 degrees per day above normal. Maximum temperature was 86.9° on the 6th day a minimum temperature of 50.9° was recorded on the 23rd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 72.92°, which is 0.92 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 62.2°, 7.6 degrees above the norm.  There were 7 days with a maximum temperature above 80°. 

Sunshine totaled 48% of the possible sunshine hours, 11 points below the norm.  We recorded 9 clear and sunny days in East Wareham and 4 days with morning fog.  The Blue Hills Observatory (official site for sunshine hour data), recorded 16 sunny days and 14 days with fog. 

Precipitation totaled 4.86 inches, 0.52 inches above normal. We had measurable rain of 0.10 inches or greater on 8 days, and 2 days with spotty showers and drizzle with less than 0.10 inches recorded.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.77 inches on the 28th.  

August

August was a warmer than average and normal for rainfall and possible sunshine for the month.  The temperature averaged 76.09 degrees, 5.59 degrees higher than the long-term average. There were 7 days with a temperature of 90 or above temperature and all day time temperatures were above 70 degrees.  The maximum temperature of 92 was recorded on the 16th.  The minimum temperature of 55 degrees was recorded on the 26th (similar to the same date in 2017).  Daytime high temperatures averaged 83.71 degrees, 5.1degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 68.48 degrees, 6.1 degrees above the norm.  There were 16 nights with temperatures of 70 or above.

Sunshine totaled 58% of the possible sunshine hours, which is the same as the long-term average for the month.  There were 4 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine. At East Wareham, 26 days were mostly cloudy and overcast, and 5 days were clear.

Precipitation totaled 3.89 inches, just a trace above normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 11 days, with 8 of those have more than 0.1 inch. The largest 24hr rainfall of 1.37 inches was recorded on the 5th. Year-to-date, 2018 has received 39.23 inches of rain, 6.88 inches above the yearly average for East Wareham.  

Official Summer Season 

The official summer (June, July and August) was warm, drier, and sunny.  The average temperature was 71.78 degrees, 2.61 degrees above the 30-year average for the 3-month period. July and August had above average temperature. Total rainfall for the season was 8.49 inches, 2.47 inches below the normal precipitation for this time of year; with July seeing very below normal rainfall.   Sunshine hours totaled 803 hours; this is 60 hours above the average for the three months, although June had below normal sunshine hours.

Crop Forecast 

New England Agricultural Statistics Service released the United States forecast for the 2018 Cranberry crop.  Overall production is predicted to be 8.63 million barrels, up 3 percent from 2017. All of the major growing regions anticipate higher crops than in 2017 except for Massachusetts.  The forecast for Massachusetts is for 1.895 million barrels, down 1 percent from 2017 production.

 

July

July 2018 was dry, sunny and with only two days with a maximum temperature of at least 90 degrees.  Ten days of the month had maximum temperatures equal or greater than 85°. Maximum temperature of 92 degrees was recorded on the 1st, and a minimum temperature of 53 degrees was recorded on the 21st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 83.03 degrees, 3.03 degrees higher than the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 65 degrees, 1.6 degrees above the norm.  

Sunshine at the Blue Hills Observatory totaled 70% of the possible sunshine hours, 13 points above average. We had 9 days with 94% or greater of possible sunshine, while on 2 days there was less than 3 % sunshine. 

Precipitation totaled 1.01 inches.  This is 2.31 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 3 days; 1 of those days had less than 0.10 inches.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.58 inches on the 7th. Year-to-date rainfall for 2018 is 35.34 inches, 6.86 inches above the average for East Wareham. 

 

 

June

June had below average sunshine hours with about average temperature and slightly below average rainfall. The mean temperature for the month was 65 degrees, 0.55 degrees below average.  Maximum temperature was 88 degrees on the 30th; a minimum temperature of 47 degrees was recorded on the 4th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 83 degrees, 3.4 degrees above the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 65 degrees, 1.6 degree above the norm. 

Sunshine average was 51% of the possible sunshine recorded.  This is 4 percentage points below the long-term average for June sunshine recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory.  Three days were rated as sunny (90% or greater of possible) with 3 days having no sunshine in the month and 2 days with 1% sunshine. 

Precipitation totaled 3.59 inches, which is 0.18 inches below the 30-year average.  We had measurable precipitation on 7 days, with 6 of those days having measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.44 inches on the 29th.  Year-to-date rainfall for 2018 now stands at 34.33 inches, 9.17 inches above average.

The first half of 2018 has been very wet with rainfall above the long-term average for the period. The rainfall for the first half was 2.45 inches above 2017 for the same period. The winter temperature (December to February) was 2.66 degrees warmer than the average while the spring months (March to May) were slightly above the average with 0.36 degrees. Sunshine has been below average for January and May but in other months of the period sunshine has been average or above average.

May

May weather was slightly dry, above average in temperature and with slightly less sunshine than normal.  Rainfall was below the 30-year average. The temperatures for May averaged 59.1 degrees, 3.27 degrees above the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 83 degrees on the 2nd and a minimum temperature of 39 degrees was recorded on the 1st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 67.7 degrees, 3.1 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 50.5 degrees, 3.4 degrees above the norm.

Based on data from the Blue Hills Observatory, sunshine averaged 51% of the possible sunshine hours, 1 percentage point below the norm.  There were only 2 days with 90% or better sunshine but 5 days with no sunshine at all.  There were 20 days that were cloudy and overcast in East Wareham. 

Precipitation totaled 2.14 inch, 1.57 inches below the average rainfall for May in East Wareham.  There were 13 days with measurable precipitation, 9 with more than 0.1 inch. The largest 24-hour rainfall events was 0.6 inches on the 20th.  Our total year-to-date rainfall is 30.74 inches, 9.35 inches above the average in East Wareham. 

Official Spring Season

The official spring (March-May) had normal average temperatures of 46.7 degrees, just slightly above the long-term average.  Snowfall for the period totaled 7 inches (none in May), 0.8 inches above average.  Precipitation was 4 inches above normal at 17.7 inches and this is 1 inch more rainfall than the same period last year (2017).  Sunshine for the spring was 549 hours, 9.3% less than the normal average number of sunshine hours for the three-month period.  Sunshine hours were below average for all spring months.

April

April 2018 was slightly wet, and an overcast month with 6 days with virtually no sunshine. The month had measurable precipitation on 12 days and 0.6 inches wetter than normal.

Overall, the temperature averaged 44.3 degrees, 3.7 degrees higher than the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 67 degrees on the 26th (this is 5 degrees colder than the 30-year maximum temperature) and a minimum temperature of 25 degrees was recorded on the 3rd which is 1.2 degrees colder than the long-term average.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 52 degrees, 2.5 degrees below the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 36.5 degrees, 1 degree colder than the norm. 

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 42% of the possible sunshine hours.  There were 5 days with 90% or better sunshine and 6 days with virtually no sunshine. 

Precipitation totaled 5.23 inches, which is 0.62 inches above normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 12 days; 8 of those had 0.10 inches or greater rainfall.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.9 inches on the 27th.  Year-to-date rainfall for 2018 stands at 28.6 inches; this is 6.83 inches above last year’s total at this time and 10.92 inches above the normal average for this time of year.

We had 0.6 inches of snowfall on April 2nd. The total snowfall for 2017-2018 season is 25.5 inches which is 14.6 inches less than the 2016-2017 season.

March

March was slightly colder than the 30-year average, with above-average rainfall, 6.4 inches of snowfall and below average sunshine.  The temperatures averaged 36.6 degrees, 0.44 degrees per day below the 30-year average. Maximum temperature for the month was 58 degrees on the 29th and a minimum temperature of 17 degrees was recorded on the 18th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 43 degrees, 2.3 degrees below the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 30.2 degrees, 1.3 degrees above the norm.

Sunshine totaled 40% of possible sunshine hours, 8% below the average.  Sunshine data are from the Blue Hill Observatory where 150 sunshine hours were recorded for the month.  Year-to-date sunshine for 2018 is below normal. 

Precipitation totaled 10.33 inches. This is 4.94 inches above normal.  We had measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater on 6 days.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 2.6 inches on the 3rd. We have received a total of 23.37 inches of precipitation year-to-date, 10.3 inches above the average for East Wareham.  We had a total of 6.4 inches of snowfall and the largest 24-hour snowfall of 3.8 inches was recorded on the 23rd. 

February

February continued the warm trend for this winter, with above normal precipitation.  The temperatures averaged 37.4 degrees, 6.4 degrees above normal.  The maximum temperature was 56 degrees on the 24th and a minimum temperature of 9 degrees was recorded on the 3rd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 45.9 degrees, 6.3 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 29.2 degrees, 6.2 degrees above the norm.  Seventeen nights had low temperatures of below 32 degrees; 1 night with single digits.  While this month was not near record warm, it was well above average and 1.6 degrees warmer than February 2017. 

Sunshine averaged 42% of the possible sunshine hours.  5 days had 80% or better sunshine (1 with 100%) while 8 days had no sunshine.  The sunshine hours are recorded at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA.  Precipitation totaled 6.43 inches, 2.69 inches above the norm.  We had measurable precipitation on 14 days, but 2 of those days had less than 0.10 inches.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.48 inches on the 5th.  There was 1 day with measurable snowfall totaling 1.0 inch, 8.5 inches below normal for the month.  Year-to-date snowfall recorded in East Wareham is now 12.9 inches, 19.2 inches less than this time in 2017; the 2017-2018 season to date is 18.5 inches, 9.9 inches below the seasonal average.  Snowfall records go back to 1952 in East Wareham. 

Official Winter Season

The official winter in East Wareham (Dec. 2017 - Feb. 2018) was warmer than normal, wet, and had below average in snowfall.   Sunshine (at Blue Hills) for the winter was 42% of possible, 5 points below the norm.  The season's temperatures averaged 34.19 degrees, 2.7 degrees above normal and 1.1 degrees colder than 2016-2017.  The low mark was 2.2 degrees below zero on Jan. 7th and the maximum was 58.1 degrees on Jan. 13th.  Sunshine hours for Dec-Feb were below the average. Precipitation totaled 15.82 inches, 3.61 inches above average.  Snowfall totaled 18.5 inches, 8.86 inches below normal.  February was the warmest of the three winter months and January had the highest rainfall, snowfall and sunshine for the winter season.

January

January was slightly colder than December (less than 1 degree) but was another above average temperature month. The average temperature was 29.9 degrees, 0.78 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature was 58.1 degrees on January 13th and this is 4 degrees above normal. A minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees below zero was recorded on the 7th. Daytime high temperatures averaged 37.7 degrees, 0.4 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 22.1 degrees, 1.2 degrees above the norm. Unseasonably warm daytime high temperatures of 50 degrees or greater were recorded on 5 days. Evening temperatures were 32 degrees or below for 25 nights. There were 5 nights with temperatures in the single digits.

Precipitation totaled 6.61 inches. This is 2.54 inches above normal. We had measurable precipitation on 9 days; 1 of those days had less than 0.10 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 3.05 inches from the 13th. We had measurable snowfall of 0.1 inches or greater on 5 days, totaling 11.9 inches for the month, 1.1 inches above average. The largest snowfall came on the 31st of January, with 6.6 inches of snow.

Sunshine averaged 41% of the possible sunshine hours, 9.5 points above normal. There were 8 days with no sunshine and 7 days with 90% or better sunshine. Total sunshine for January 2018 was 28 points above that recorded in January 2017.

We had slightly above-average temperatures and above average sunshine hours with above average rainfall and slightly above average snowfall.

 

2017

December

Unlike last year, December 2017 was colder than average in temperature and dry.  The temperature averaged 30.5 degrees, 3.9 degrees per day below the 30-year average (compared to almost 14 degrees above average in 2015).  Maximum temperature was 57.0 degrees on the 6th; a minimum temperature of 4.0 degrees was recorded on the 29th and 31st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 38.3 degrees, 4.4 degrees below the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 22.7 degrees, 3.5 degrees below the norm.

 

Precipitation totaled 2.78 inches, 1.75 inches below normal.  We recorded 6 days with more than 0.1 inches of rain. The largest rainfall was 0.72 inches on the 6th.  Total rainfall for 2017 was 55.72 inches, 5.68 inches above the average for East Wareham and 14.48 inches more than the total rainfall for 2016. Therefore, 2017 was a wet year.  There were 3 days with measurable snow this month – a cumulative total of 5.6 inches fell on the 15th, 16th and the 31st. The total snowfall was 1.38 inches below the average for the month of December in East Wareham of 6.98 inches.

 

Sunshine for the month (recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory) was below average, totaling 43% of possible, 5 points below the norm.  There were six days with 90% or greater sunshine hours and 5 days with no sunshine at all.
