2024

March

Weather as Recorded at the UMass Cranberry Station:

East Wareham

March was warmer than the 30-year average, with above average rainfall above average sunshine and no snowfall.  The temperatures averaged 41.3 degrees, 4.3 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature for the month was 63 degrees on the 15th and a minimum temperature of 19 degrees was recorded on the 1st and 2nd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 49.58 degrees, 4.1 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 33 degrees, 4 degrees above the norm.

Sunshine totaled 45% of possible sunshine hours, 3% below the average.  Sunshine data are from the Blue Hill Observatory where 166 sunshine hours were recorded for the month.  Year-to-date sunshine for 2023 are 6 points above normal. 

Precipitation totaled 7.82 inches. This is 2.43 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater on 12 days.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.65 inches on the 24th. We have received a total of 18.9 inches of precipitation year-to-date, 5.87 inches above the average for East Wareham and 5.2 inches more than 2023 at this point. We had no measurable snowfall.  The long-term snowfall for March is 5.34 inches.

September

September was dry, slightly warm, and above average sunshine for the month.  The temperature averaged 64.1 degrees; 1 degree per day above normal. Maximum temperature was 85° on the 1st day which is 1.9 degrees above to the long-term maximum temperature. The minimum temperature was 42° and was recorded on the 12th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 74.6°, which is 4.6 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 53.3°; 1 degree below the norm.  There were 10 days with a maximum temperature of at least 80°. 

Sunshine totaled 55% of the possible sunshine hours, 4.1% below the norm.  They were 10 days of possible sunshine hours above 90% and 4 days with virtually no sunshine at all.  The Blue Hills Observatory (official site for sunshine hour data) recorded 6 days with fog and the rest were sunny and clear. At East Wareham, 9 days were clear in the month and the rest were cloudy, misty or rainy.

Precipitation totaled 3.5 inches; 0.8 inches below normal. The rainfall was 3.1 inches less than the amount received for the month in 2023. We had measurable rain of at least 0.10 inches on 5 days when it rained, and not even drizzles were recorded on any other day.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.42 inches on the 21st.  By the end of September, a total of 45.24 inches of rainfall had been received for the year, 8.55 inches above the long-term average, and 3.6 inches more than 2023 total rainfall at this time of the year.

February

East Wareham

February had an above average temperature, below average precipitation and well below average snowfall.  The temperatures averaged 32.9 degrees,  1.9 degrees above the long-term average.  The maximum temperature was 60 degrees on the 28th and a minimum temperature of 14 degrees was recorded on the 21st and 22nd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 41.5 degrees, 2.2degrees above the long-term average for the month. Evening temperatures averaged 24.2 degrees, 1.2 degree above the long-term average.

Sunshine averaged 58% of the possible sunshine hours, 8 point above average.  Eight days had 90% or better sunshine while 4 days had no sunshine.  The sunshine hours are recorded at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA.  Precipitation totaled 3.2 inches, 0.4 inches less than the long-term average.  We had measurable precipitation on 8 days. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.2 inches on the 28th.  February had 7 inches of snowfall, 2.5 inches less than the long-term average for February. Year-to-date snowfall recorded in East Wareham is now 9 inches compared to 33.5 inches in 2022 but better than 6 inches in 2023 . Snowfall records go back to 1952 in East Wareham. 

Official Winter Season

The official winter in East Wareham (Dec. 2023- Feb. 2024) was warmer than normal (3 degrees warmer), wetter (by 4.5 inches), and well below average snowfall (less by 16.8 inches).  Sunshine (at Blue Hills) for the winter was 145 hours , 11 points above the norm.  The season's minimum temperature was 11 degrees on Dec 11, 19th and Jan 23rd and the maximum was 60 degrees on February 28th.  Precipitation totaled 16.71 inches; 4.5 inches above average.  Snowfall totaled 10.5 inches; 16.8 inches below normal. January was the warmest of the three winter months and  highest rainfall. February was the snowiest for the winter season.

January

EAST WAREHAM

January was above average temperature month, and below average snowfall and above average precipitation. The average temperature was 31.9 degrees, 2.8 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature was 55 degrees on January 10, 11 and 14th and this is 0.9 degrees above normal. A minimum temperature of 11 degrees was recorded on the 23rd ;2.4 degrees above normal. Daytime high temperatures averaged 40.4 degrees, 3.1 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 23.4 degrees, 3.4 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures of 32 degrees or below were recorded on 27 nights.

Precipitation totaled 7.92 inches. This is 3.85 inches above normal. We had measurable precipitation on 14 days; 2 of those days had less than 0.10 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 2.27 inches on the 8th. We had a total of 5 inches of snowfall, less than half of a January long-term average snowfall of 10.85 inches.

Sunshine averaged 35% of the possible sunshine hours. There were 10 days with no sunshine and 5 days with 90% or better sunshine. Total sunshine for January 2024 was 32 points below the long-term average for January.

We had above-average temperature and below average sunshine hours with above average rainfall and below average snowfall for January.

2023

December

East Wareham

December 2023 was wet with below average snowfall, and warmer than average.  The temperature averaged 39.2 degrees, 4.9 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature was 60 degrees on the 11th and 19th ; a minimum temperature of 15 degrees was recorded on the 23rd  and 24th. Daytime high temperatures averaged 47.9 degrees, 5.2 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 30.4 degrees, 5.2 degrees above the norm.

Precipitation totaled 5.59 inches; 1.1 inches above normal.  Rainfall was recorded on 13 days with 8 days  receiving more than 0.1 inches. The largest rainfall was 1.36 inches on the 19th. Total rainfall for 2023 was 51.25 inches, 1.21 inches above the average for East Wareham and 3.46 inches more than the total rainfall for 2022.  The total snowfall of 1.5 inches was recorded on the 7th in contrast to December 2022 that did not have any snowfalls.  The long-term snowfall average in East Wareham for December is 6.98 inches of snow.

Sunshine for the month (recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory) was above average, totaling 44% of possible, 4 points above the norm.  There were 8 days with 90% or greater sunshine hours and 8 days with no sunshine at all. 

November

November 2023 was colder than normal, drier than average, and had above average sunshine.  The temperature averaged 41 degrees; 3.1 degrees below normal.  Maximum temperature was 65 degrees, 2.3 degrees below normal and this was recorded on the 8th and 27th; a minimum temperature of 19 degrees, 1 degree below the long-term minimum was recorded on the 26th and 27th.  Prior to this minimum temperature, the first hard freeze had been recorded on the 3rd with a temperature of 27 degrees. The 13th minimum temperature was a hard-killing frost. Daytime high temperatures averaged 52 degrees, 0.4 degrees below the norm.  Nighttime temperatures averaged 30 degrees, 5 degrees below the norm.  November 2023 average temperature was colder than November 2022 and was also below the 30-year average for the month. 

Precipitation totaled 1.66 inches, 3 inches below normal and 0.3 inches less than the same month in 2022. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 7 days and 5 days had precipitation that was more than 0.10 inches.  The largest single day rainfall was recorded on the 27th of the month (0.4 inches). No snowfall was recorded for the month of November in East Wareham. 

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 62% of the possible, 15 points above long-term average.  There were 7 days with 90% or more sunshine, and 2 days with no sunshine. The fall months (September -November) of 2023 were slightly warmer by 1.9 degrees, and drier than long-term average, the total rainfall for the fall months was 10.63 inches, 2.56 inches below the 30-year average.

October

October had an above average temperature warmer than the long-term average for the month, above average sunshine hours and below average rainfall.  The temperature averaged 57.8 degrees, 5.1 degrees per day above average for October.  Maximum temperature of 83 degrees was recorded on the 5th; a minimum temperature of 39 degrees was recorded on the 31st. Daytime high temperatures averaged 67.5 degrees; 5.7 degrees higher than the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 48.1 degrees, 4.4 degrees above the norm.

Sunshine totaled 56% of the possible sunshine hours, 1 point above the norm.  The Blue Hills observatory had 10 days that had fog and haze and 4 days with no sunshine.  In East Wareham, 12 days in October were clear and the rest were foggy, cloudy, or misty.

Precipitation totaled 2.37; 1.77 inches below the 30-year average and 4.52 inches below this time in 2022.  The largest rainfall came on the 22nd was 0.78 inches.  Measurable rain was recorded on 8 days, 5 days of which had rainfall of 0.10 inches or greater. Year-to-date rainfall for 2023 is 44 inches; 3.17 inches above long-term average for East Wareham and 3.8 inches above rainfall received at this point in 2022.

September

September was wet, warm, and below average sunshine for the month.  The temperature averaged 66.8°, 3.7 degrees per day above normal. Maximum temperature was 92° on the 8th day which is 8.9 degrees above to the long-term maximum temperature. The minimum temperature was 42° and was recorded on the 27th and 28th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 75.8°, which is 3.8 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 57.7°; 3.1 degrees above the norm.  There were 13 days with a maximum temperature of at least 80°. 

Sunshine totaled 53% of the possible sunshine hours, 6.5% below the norm.  They were 10 days of possible sunshine hours above 90% and 6 days with virtually no sunshine at all.  The Blue Hills Observatory (official site for sunshine hour data) recorded 11 days with fog and the rest were sunny and clear. At East Wareham, 12 days were clear in the month and the rest were cloudy, misty, or rainy.

Precipitation totaled 6.6 inches; 2.26 inches above normal. The rainfall was 1.8 inches more than the amount received for the month in 2022. We had measurable rain of at least 0.10 inches on 7 days, and 3 days with spotty showers and drizzle with less than 0.10 inches recorded.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 2 inches on the 12th.  By the end of September, a total of 41.63 inches of rainfall had been received for the year, 4.9 inches above the long-term average, and 8.33 inches more than 2022 total rainfall at this time of the year.

August

August was warm, wet and an average sunshine month.  The temperature averaged 71.15 degrees, 0.65 degrees above the long-term average. There were 2 days with a temperature of 90 or above and 8 days with temperatures of at least 85 degrees.  The maximum temperature of 90 was recorded on the 13th and 22nd.  The minimum temperature of 53 degrees was recorded on the 24th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 80.87 degrees, 2.2 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 61.42 degrees, 0.98 degrees above the norm.  All night temperatures were less than 70 and 8 nights had temperatures equal to or below 60 degrees.

Sunshine totaled 57% of the possible sunshine hours, which is 1% point below the norm.  There were 8 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine, and 3 days with no sunshine at all. At East Wareham, 16 days were clear with no clouds or fog. 

Precipitation totaled 4.67 inches, 0.8 inches above normal and 0.26 inches less than August 2022.  We had measurable precipitation on 13 days, with 9 of those having more than 0.1 inch. The highest 24hr precipitation of 1.46 inches was recorded on the 19th. Year-to-date rainfall received in 2023 is 35.03 inches, 2.68 inches above long-term yearly average for East Wareham. Compared to 2022 at this stage, we have received 6.52 inches more rainfall for the year.

Official Summer Season 

The official summer (June, July, and August) was warmer, above average precipitation and below average sunshine hours.  The average temperature was 70.96 degrees, 1.79 degrees above the 30-year average for the 3-month period. Total rainfall for the season was 14.04 inches, 3.08 inches above the normal precipitation for this time of year; 2023 season had 5.88 inches more precipitation compared to 2022 season.  Sunshine hours totaled 712 hours; this is 31 hours below the average for the three months.  We had a maximum temperature of 92 degrees recorded on July 29th and a minimum temperature of 46 degrees recorded on 4th, 5th, and 9th of June. We did not have an official heat wave this summer.  A heat wave is typically defined as three consecutive days where the temperature reaches or exceeds 90 °F. 

July

July 2023 was wet, average sunshine and above average temperature. The average temperature for July was 76.6 degrees; 5.13 degrees above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature of 92 degrees was recorded on the 29th and a minimum temperature of 55 degrees was recorded on the 31st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 85.68 degrees, 6 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 67.5 degrees, 4.1 degrees above the norm. 

Sunshine at the Blue Hills Observatory totaled 58% of the possible sunshine hours, 0.5% above the long-term average. Only 5 days had sunshine of at least 90% possible sunshine hours and 3 days had no sunshine at all. At East Wareham, 22 days in July were foggy or cloudy.

Precipitation totaled 3.86 inches.  This is 0.54 inches above normal and 3.6 inches of rainfall more than what was received in 2022.  We had measurable precipitation on 10 days; 6 of those days had more than 0.1 inches.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.27 inches on the 5th. Year-to-date rainfall for 2023 is 30.36 (6.79 inches more than 2022 at this stage), 1.88 inches more than the average year-to-date for East Wareham. 

June

June was wetter than average, below average temperature, and below average sunshine hours. The mean temperature for the month was 65.1 degrees, 0.4 degrees below average.  Maximum temperature was 85 degrees on the 27th; a minimum temperature of 46 degrees (0.6 degrees warmer than long-term average) was recorded on the 4th, 5th, and 9th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 74.4 degrees, 1.7 degrees above the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 55.8 degrees, and 1.3 degrees below the norm. 

Sunshine average was 44% of the possible sunshine recorded.  This is 10.5 % below the long-term average for June sunshine recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory. Three days were rated as sunny (90% or greater of possible) and 2 days with no sunshine in the month. 

Precipitation totaled 5.51 inches, 2.54 inches more rainfall than June 2022, and 1.74 inches above the 30-year average.  We had measurable precipitation on 14 days, and all having measurable precipitation of at least 0.10 inches.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.35 inches on the 18th.  Year-to-date rainfall for 2023 now stands at 26.5 inches, 1.34 inches above average, and 3.18 inches better than 2022.

The first half of 2023 has been slightly wet with rainfall above the long-term average for the period. The rainfall for the first half was 1.34 inches above 30-year long-term average rainfall. The winter temperature (December to February) was 4 degrees warmer than the average while the spring months (March to May) were 1.34 degrees warmer than the long-term average. Sunshine hours have been slightly above average for the first half of the year.

May

May weather was above average in temperature and with more sunshine than normal.  Rainfall was below the 30-year average. The temperatures for May averaged 57 degrees, 1.2 degrees above the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 85 degrees on the 13th and a minimum temperature of 31 degrees was recorded on the 18th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 68.8 degrees; 4.2 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 45.2 degrees, 1.9 degrees below the norm. On average, the night temperatures were colder than the norm.

Based on data from the Blue Hills Observatory, sunshine averaged 75% of the possible sunshine hours, 23 percentage point above the norm.  There were 14 days with 90% or better sunshine and 2 days with less than 5% sunshine.  Only 2 days were reported to be foggy in East Wareham. 

Precipitation totaled 3.34 inches (this is 0.62 inches more precipitation than received in May 2022), 0.4 inches below the average rainfall for May in East Wareham.  There were 5 days with measurable precipitation, and each day had at least 0.1 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall event was 1.77 inches on the 21st.  Our total year-to-date rainfall is 20.99 inches, 0.4 inches below the average in East Wareham but 0.64 inches more than this time in 2022. 

Official Spring Season

The official spring (March-May) had average temperatures of 47.6 degrees; 1.3 degrees above the long-term average. No snowfall was recorded for the period (March-May). The long-term average total snow is 6.16.   Precipitation was 2.86 inches below normal at 10.82 inches and this is 0.75 inches more rainfall than the same period last year (2022).  All months had below average precipitation. Sunshine for the spring was 729 hours, 20.5 % more than the normal average number of sunshine hours for the three-month period. All three months had above average sunshine hours. 

April

April 2023 was slightly warm with below average precipitation and above average sunshine.

Overall, the temperature averaged 48.4 degrees, 1.33 degrees warmer than the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 73 degrees on the 25th, and a minimum temperature of 24 degrees was recorded on 4th night which is 2.2 degrees colder than the long-term average.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 56.1 degrees; 1.6 degrees warmer than the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 38.7 degrees; 1.2 degree warmer than the norm. 

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 50% of the possible sunshine hours. Total sunshine hours were 200 hr., and this represents 7 hr. more than the long-term average. They were 4 days with 90% or better sunshine and 6 days with virtually no sunshine. 

Precipitation totaled 3.99 inches, which is 0.62 inch below normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 10 days; 7 days had 0.10 inches or greater rainfall.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.04 inches recorded on the 17th.  Year-to-date rainfall for 2023 stands at 17.65 inches; this is similar to last year’s total at this time and about the same as the normal average for this time of year.

We had no snowfall in April. The total snowfall so far for the year (2023) is 6 inches which is 30 inches less than the snow received at this time in 2022.

March

March was warmer than the 30-year average, with below-average rainfall and no snowfall and above average sunshine.  The temperatures averaged 38.3 degrees, 1.3 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature for the month was 62 degrees on the 27th and a minimum temperature of 23 degrees was recorded on the 20th, 21st and 31st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 48.2 degrees, 2.9 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 28.4 degrees, 0.5 degrees above the norm.

Sunshine totaled 51% of possible sunshine hours, 3% above the average.  Sunshine data are from the Blue Hill Observatory where 188 sunshine hours were recorded for the month.  Year-to-date sunshine for 2023 are 59 points below normal. 

Precipitation totaled 3.49 inches. This is 1.9 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater on 9 days.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.76 inches on the 14th. We have received a total of 13.7 inches of precipitation year-to-date, 0.6 inches above the average for East Wareham and the same as 2022 at this point. We had no measurable snowfall in March.  The long-term snowfall for March is 5.34 inches.

February

February had an above average temperature, below average precipitation and well below average snowfall.  The temperatures averaged 33.5 degrees, 2.5 degrees above the long-term average.  The maximum temperature was 66 degrees on the 11th and a minimum temperature of 9 degrees below zero was recorded on the 4th and 5th and this is the second coldest in 42 years.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 43.6 degrees, 4.3 degrees above the long-term average for the month. Evening temperatures averaged 23.4 degrees, 0.1 degree above the long-term average.

Sunshine averaged 46% of the possible sunshine hours, 4 points below average.  5 days had 90% or better sunshine while 5 days had no sunshine.  The sunshine hours are recorded at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA.  Precipitation totaled 0.79 inches 2.84 inches less than the long-term average.  We had measurable precipitation on 10 days. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.2 inches on the 18th.  February had 2 inches of snowfall, 3 inches less than February 2022, and 17 inches less than February 2021. Year-to-date snowfall recorded in East Wareham is now 6 inches compared to 33.5 inches in 2022.  Snowfall records go back to 1952 in East Wareham.

The official winter in East Wareham (Dec. 2022- Feb. 2023) was warmer than normal (4 degrees warmer), wetter (by 3.6 inches), and well below average snowfall (less by 21.4 inches).  Sunshine (at Blue Hills) for the winter was 120 hours, 13.7 points below the norm.  The season's minimum temperature was -9 degrees on Feb 4th and 5th and the maximum was 66 degrees on February 11th.  Sunshine hours for Dec-Feb were below the average. Precipitation totaled 15.8 inches; 3.6 inches above average.  Snowfall totaled 6 inches; 21.4 inches below normal. January was the warmest of the three winter months and December had no snowfalls while January being the snowiest and the highest rainfall for the winter season.

January

January was above average temperature month, and below average snowfall and above average precipitation. The average temperature was 37.95 degrees, 8.8 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature was 55 degrees on January 13th and 31st,  and this is 0.9 degrees above normal. A minimum temperature of 23 degrees was recorded on the 10th and 28th  and this is 20.6 degrees above normal. Daytime high temperatures averaged 46 degrees, 8.7 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 29.9 degrees, 9 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures of 32 degrees or below were recorded on 23 nights.

Precipitation totaled 9.38 inches. This is 5.31 inches above normal. We had measurable precipitation on 19 days; 3 of those days had less than 0.10 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.67 inches from the 26th. We had a total of 4 inches of  snowfall (24.5 inches less than January 2022), the long-term average snowfall for the month is 10.85 inches.

Sunshine averaged 26% of the possible sunshine hours. There were 14 days with no sunshine and only 2 days with 90% or better sunshine. Total sunshine for January 2023 was 58 points below the long-term average for January.

We had above-average temperature and below average sunshine hours with above average rainfall and below average snowfall for January.
