2021

January

Weather as Recorded at the UMass Cranberry Station:

East Wareham

January was an above average temperature month, and below average snowfall and precipitation. The average temperature was 32 degrees, 2.8 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature was 53 degrees on January 17th  and this is 1 degrees below normal. A minimum temperature of 9 degrees was recorded on the 31st  and this is 6.6 degrees above normal. Daytime high temperatures averaged 39.84 degrees, 2.54 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 24.1 degrees, 3.2 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures of 32 degrees or below were recorded on 28 nights.

Precipitation totaled 2.5 inches. This is 1.57 inches below normal. We had measurable precipitation on 10 days; 2 of those days had less than 0.10 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.9 inches from the 17th. We had a total of 8 inches of  snowfall (4 inches more than January 2020), the long-term average snowfall for the month is 10.85 inches.

Sunshine averaged 47% of the possible sunshine hours. There were 7 days with no sunshine and 5 days with 90% or better sunshine. Total sunshine for January 2021 was 1 point above the long-term average for January and 2 points below sunshine hours recorded in January 2020.

We had an above-average temperature and about average sunshine hours with below average rainfall and snowfall.

2020

December

December 2020 was snowy, wet and slightly warmer than average in temperature.  The temperature averaged 36.1 degrees, 1.73 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature was 63 degrees on the 1st; a minimum temperature of 19 degrees was recorded on the 9th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 44.52 degrees, 1.82 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 27.65 degrees, 1.45 degrees above the norm.

Precipitation totaled 7.63 inches; 3.1 inches above normal.  We recorded 9 days with more than 0.1 inches of rain. The largest rainfall was 2.5 inches on the 6th.  Total rainfall for 2020 was 38.6 inches, 11.44 inches below the average for East Wareham and 22.41 inches less than the total rainfall for 2019.  The summer months of 2020 were very dry. There was 26 inches of snowfall recorded in December, which is 19.02 inches more than average.

Sunshine for the month (recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory) was below average, totaling 41% of possible, 7 points below the norm.  There were 3 days with 90% or greater sunshine hours and 9 days with no sunshine at all. 

 

November

November was above average in temperature, drier than average, and above average sunshine.  The temperature averaged 47.2 degrees, 3 degrees above normal.  Maximum temperature was 73 degrees on the 8th; a minimum temperature of 18 degrees was recorded on the 19th and 20th.  Prior to this minimum temperature, a hard-killing frost had been recorded on the 15th with a temperature of 27 degrees. Daytime high temperatures averaged 58.2 degrees, 0.2 degrees below the norm.  Nighttime temperatures averaged 36.1 degrees, 0.8 degrees above the norm.  November 2020 average temperature was warmer than that in November 2019 and was above the 30-year average for the month. 

Precipitation totaled 2.87 inches, 1.81 inches below normal and 0.54 inches less than the same month in 2019. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 7 days and precipitation of 0.10 inches or more was recorded on 6 days.  The largest single day rainfall was recorded on the 2nd of the month (0.78 inches). No snowfall was recorded for the month of November in East Wareham. 

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 53% of the possible, 6 points above long-term average.  There were 10 days with 90% or more sunshine, and 5 days with no sunshine. 

October

October had an average temperature warmer than the long-term average for the month, below average sunshine hours and below average rainfall.  The temperature averaged 55.21 degrees, 2.53 degrees per day above average for October.  Maximum temperature of 75 degrees was recorded on the 1st and 16th; a minimum temperature of 28 degrees was recorded on the 31st. Daytime high temperatures averaged 64.68 degrees, 2.88 degrees higher than the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 45.74 degrees, 2.04 degrees above the norm. The October average temperatures were consistent with the past 9 years except 2018 in which temperatures were warmer than the 30-year average. 

Sunshine totaled 50% of the possible sunshine hours, 5 points below the norm, but 19 point better than October 2019.  The Blue Hills observatory had 10 days that were mostly clear (at least 80% of possible) and 7 days with no sunshine.  In East Wareham, 10 days in October were either cloudy or overcast.

Precipitation totaled 3.61 inches, 0.53 inches below the 30-year average but 5.07 inches below this time in 2019.  The largest rainfall came on the 14th, 0.87 inches.  Measurable rain was recorded on 14 days, 7 days of which had rainfall of 0.10 inches or greater. Year-to-date rainfall for 2020 is 28.1 inches; 12.73 inches below long-term average for East Wareham and 19.73 inches below rainfall received at this point in 2019.

September

September was dry, slightly warmer and with slightly below average sunshine for the month.  The temperature averaged 64.4°, 1.33 degrees per day above normal. Maximum temperature was 86° on the 5th day which is 3 degrees above to the long-term maximum temperature. The minimum temperature was 40° and was recorded on three nights (20th, 21st and 22nd).  Daytime high temperatures averaged 74.73°, which is 2.73 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 54.1°, 0.5 degrees below the norm.  There were 8 days with a maximum temperature of at least 80°. 

Sunshine totaled 58% of the possible sunshine hours, 1.2 points below the norm.  They were 5 days of possible sunshine hours above 90% and one day with virtually no sunshine at all.  The Blue Hills Observatory (official site for sunshine hour data), recorded 11 days with fog and the rest were sunny and clear. 

Precipitation totaled 1.13 inches; 3.21 inches below normal. The rainfall was 1.05 inches less than the amount received for the month in 2019. We had measurable rain of 0.10 inches or greater on 4 days, and 3 days with spotty showers and drizzle with less than 0.10 inches recorded.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.27 inches on the 20th.  By the end of September, a total of 24.15 inches of rainfall had been received for the year, 12.2 inches below the long-term average and 63% of 2019 total rainfall at this time of the year.

 

August

 August was warm, dry and sunny month.  The temperature averaged 74.1°, 3.58 degrees above the long-term average. There were 5 days with a temperature of 90° or above and 10 days with temperatures above 85° but less than 90°.  The maximum temperature of 95° was recorded on the 4th.  The minimum temperature of 50° degrees was recorded on the 31st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 82.87°, 4.27 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 65.29°, 3.29 degrees above the norm.  There were 8 nights with temperatures of 70° or above and 4 nights with temperatures below 60° degrees.

 Sunshine totaled 62% of the possible sunshine hours, which is 4 points above the norm.  There were 5 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine, and three days with no sunshine at all.

 Precipitation totaled 2.07 inches; 1.8 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 10 days, with 7 of those have more than 0.1 inch. The highest 24hr precipitation of 0.71 inches was recorded on the 23rd. Year-to-date, 2020 has received 23.36 inches of rain, 9 inches less than yearly average for East Wareham. Compared to 2019 at this stage, we have received 13.33 inches less rainfall for the year.

 Official Summer Season 

The official summer (June, July and August) was warmer, drier and sunny.  The average temperature was 72.25, 3.08 degrees above the 30-year average for the 3-month period. All three months had above average temperature.  Total rainfall for the season was 4.54 inches, 6.42 inches below the normal precipitation for this time of year; 2020 season had 9.45 inches less precipitation compared to 2019 season. This period has been unseasonably dry in East Wareham.  Sunshine hours totaled 808 hours; this is 65 hours above the average for the three months.  We had a maximum temperature of 96° recorded on July 28th and a minimum temperature of 43° recorded on 1st of June.  There were 14 days of 90° or more in July and August but none in June.  We had a heat wave this season. 

July

July 2020 was very dry, sunny and warm.  Nine days of the month had maximum temperatures of at least 90°. Maximum temperature of 96° was recorded on the 28th, and a minimum temperature of 48° was recorded on the 1st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 83.26°, 3.66 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 66.9°, 3.5 degrees above the norm.  

Sunshine at the Blue Hills Observatory totaled 57% of the possible sunshine hours, same points as the long-term average. We had 7 days with 90% or greater of possible sunshine, while the least possible sunshine hours were 3%. 

Precipitation totaled 0.5 inches.  This is 2.82 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 6 days; 2 of those days had more than 0.10 inches.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.22 inches on the 15th. Year-to-date rainfall for 2020 is 21.29 (12.69 inches less than 2019 at this stage), 2.82 inches less than the average for the month at East Wareham. 

June

June was a sunny month with above average temperature and well below average rainfall. The mean temperature for the month was 67.6 degrees, 2.1 degrees above average.  Maximum temperature was 85 degrees on the 21st; a minimum temperature of 43 degrees (2.4 degrees cooler than long-term average) was recorded on the 1st.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 76.2 degrees, 3.5 degrees above the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 59 degrees, and 2 degrees above the norm. 

Sunshine average was 61% of the possible sunshine recorded.  This is 6 points above the long-term average for June sunshine recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory.  Five days were rated as sunny (90% or greater of possible) with 2 days having less than 10% possible sunshine in the month. 

Precipitation totaled 1.97 inches, which is 3.18 inches below June 2019, and 1.8 inches below the 30-year average.  We had measurable precipitation on 7 days, with 5 of those days having measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.71 inches on the 28th.  Year-to-date rainfall for 2020 now stands at 20.79 inches, 4.37 inches below average.

The first half of 2020 has been slightly dry with rainfall below the long-term average for the period. The rainfall for the first half was 7.34 inches below 2019 for the same period because all but one month had slightly below average rainfall. The winter temperature (December to February) was 3.29 degrees warmer than the average while the spring months (March to May) were similar to the long-term average. Sunshine hours have been slightly above average for the first half of the year except for December, February and April.

 

 

 

May

May weather was slightly dry, average in temperature and with more sunshine than normal.  Rainfall was slightly below the 30-year average. The temperatures for May averaged 55.9 degrees, 0.1 degrees above the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 79 degrees on the 27th and a minimum temperature of 35 degrees was recorded on the 2nd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 64.5 degrees as the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 47.3 degrees, 0.2 degrees above the norm.

Based on data from the Blue Hills Observatory, sunshine averaged 60% of the possible sunshine hours, 8 percentage point above the norm.  There were 9 days with 90% or better sunshine and only 1 day with no sunshine at all.  There were 15 days that were cloudy and overcast in East Wareham. 

Precipitation totaled 3.34 inch (this is 2.1 inches less precipitation than received in May 2019), 0.37 inches below the average rainfall for May in East Wareham.  There were 12 days with measurable precipitation, 10 with more than 0.1 inch. The largest 24-hour rainfall event was 0.91 inches on the 2nd.  Our total year-to-date rainfall is 18.82 inches, 2.57 inches below the average in East Wareham. 

Official Spring Season

The official spring (March-May) had normal average temperatures of 46.6 degrees, just 0.3 degrees above the long-term average.  Snowfall for the period totaled 1 inch (none in April and May).  Precipitation was 0.1 inches below normal at 13.6 inches and this is 0.5 inches more rainfall than the same period last year (2019).  Sunshine for the spring was 612 hours, 7 % more than the normal average number of sunshine hours for the three-month period although sunshine hours were below average for April but above average for March and May.

April

April 2020 was a cold, slightly wet, and an overcast month with 10 days with virtually no sunshine. The month had measurable precipitation on 16 days and 1 inch wetter than normal.

Overall, the temperature averaged 43.2 degrees, 3 degrees colder than the 30-year average.  The maximum temperature was 70 degrees on the 3rd, this is 2 degrees colder than the 30-year maximum temperature and a minimum temperature of 28 degrees was recorded on three nights (1st 12th and 21st) which is 1.8 degrees warmer than the long-term average.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 51.6 degrees; 2.9 degrees colder than the norm.  Evening low temperatures averaged 34.4 degrees; 3.1 degree colder than the norm. 

Sunshine, recorded at the Blue Hills Observatory, averaged 36% of the possible sunshine hours (same as April 2019). Total sunshine hours were 144 hours, and this represents 49 hours less than the long-term average.  There were only 2 days with 90% or better sunshine and 10 days with virtually no sunshine. 

Precipitation totaled 5.63 inches, which is 1 inch above normal.  We had measurable precipitation on 16 days; 13 days had 0.10 inches or greater rainfall.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.73 inches recorded on three days (4th, 14th and 27th).  Year-to-date rainfall for 2020 stands at 15.48 inches; this is 3.97 inches less than last year’s total at this time and 2.2 inches above the normal average for this time of year.

We had no snowfall in April. The total snowfall so far for the year (2020) is 5 inches which is 3 inches above this time in 2019.

March

March was warmer than the 30-year average, with below-average rainfall, 1 inch of snowfall and above average sunshine.  The temperatures averaged 40.74 degrees, 3.7 degrees per day above the 30-year average. Maximum temperature for the month was 63 degrees on the 28th and a minimum temperature of 18 degrees was recorded on the 2nd.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 49.42 degrees, 4.1 degrees above the norm.  Evening temperatures averaged 32.1 degrees, 3.2 degrees above the norm.

Sunshine totaled 53% of possible sunshine hours, 5% above the average.  Sunshine data are from the Blue Hill Observatory where 195 sunshine hours were recorded for the month.  Year-to-date sunshine for 2020 are 15 points above normal. 

Precipitation totaled 4.66 inches. This is 0.73 inches below normal.  We had measurable precipitation of 0.10 inches or greater on 8 days.  The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.43 inches on the 24th. We have received a total of 9.85 inches of precipitation year-to-date, 3.22 inches below the average for East Wareham and 4.25 inches less than 2019 at this point. We had a total of 1 inch of snowfall received in a single day (7th). The long-term snowfall for March is 5.34 inches.

February

February had above average temperatures, slightly below normal precipitation and no snowfall.  The temperatures averaged 35.7 degrees, 4.7 degrees above normal.  The maximum temperature was 69 degrees on the 13th and a minimum temperature of 10 degrees was recorded on the 15th and 16th.  Daytime high temperatures averaged 44.7 degrees; 5.4 degrees higher than the long-term average for the month. Evening temperatures averaged 26.7 degrees, 3.8 degree above the long-term average. There was no night with single digits. 

Sunshine averaged 43% of the possible sunshine hours, 7 points below average.  10 days had 80% or better sunshine (2 with 100%) while 8 days had no sunshine.  The sunshine hours are recorded at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA.  Precipitation totaled 3.47 inches 0.14 inches less than the long-term average.  We had measurable precipitation on 10 days. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.73 inches on the 27th.  February had 1 day with trace snowfall and no measurable snowfall in the month.  Year-to-date snowfall recorded in East Wareham is now 4 inches; the 2019-2020 season to date is 11 inches, 16.36 inches below the seasonal average.  Snowfall records go back to 1952 in East Wareham. 

Official Winter Season

The official winter in East Wareham (Dec. 2019- Feb. 2020) was warmer than normal (3.29 degrees warmer), wet (by 2.5 inches), and below average snowfall.  Sunshine (at Blue Hills) for the winter was 43% of possible, 5 points below the norm.  The season's temperatures averaged 34.8 degrees, 3.29 degrees above normal.  The low mark was 10 degrees on Jan. 22nd, 23rd; Feb 15th and 16th and the maximum was 69 degrees on Feb. 13th.  Sunshine hours for Dec-Feb were below the average. Precipitation totaled 14.66 inches, 2.45 inches above average and 1.32 inches above the same season last year (2018-2019).  Snowfall totaled 11 inches; 16.36 inches below normal.  February was the warmest of the three winter months and did not have snowfall. January had the highest rainfall for the winter season.

January

January was an above average temperature month, and below average snowfall and precipitation. The average temperature was 34.7 degrees, 5.6 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature was 64 degrees on January 13th  and this is 10 degrees above normal. A minimum temperature of 10 degrees was recorded on the 22nd and 23rd and this is 7.6 degrees above normal. Daytime high temperatures averaged 42.9 degrees, 5.6 degrees above the norm. Evening temperatures averaged 26.5 degrees, 5.6 degrees above the norm. Unseasonably warm daytime high temperatures of 50 degrees or greater were recorded on 5 days. Evening temperatures of 32 degrees or below were recorded on 22 nights.

Precipitation totaled 1.72 inches (4.6 inches less than January 2019). This is 2.35 inches below normal. We had measurable precipitation on 9 days; 4 of those days had less than 0.10 inches. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 0.67 inches from the 26th. We had a total of 4 inches of  snowfall (1 inch on the 8th and 3 inches on the 19th), the long-term average snowfall for the month is 10.85 inches.
