Tick Testing Resources
The Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment is frequently contacted for information on tick testing.
There are many commercial laboratories that can provide testing of ticks for common pathogens, located all over the country. You can see this for yourself by using an online search engine and search the term ‘tick testing.’
Below, we provide you with a small sample of the currently available such laboratories. We do not endorse any of these laboratories or in any way guarantee the quality of their services, their prices or their turnaround times. This is not a complete list. It is provided as a sample only and is not meant to imply that other services are not just as valuable. Use an online search engine and search the term ‘tick testing’ for additional options or contact your state, county or local Board of Health for more information.

Please carefully evaluate each option for tick testing yourself before choosing one of them. Laboratories usually test for multiple pathogens and sometimes offer choices of how many pathogens are to be tested. They sometimes offer choices of turnaround times for their testing. These factors and others influence the amount of the charges for these tests. The chart above shows you options, including prices, from five laboratories. This information was provided to us by the laboratories in April, 2021. All of it should be doublechecked by you directly with the laboratory prior to ordering your test.
Something else to be aware of is that various public agencies (state, county, or municipal governments, usually) sometimes offer tick testing to their residents without charge. Again, contact your state, county or local Board of Health for more information.
More information on tick-borne pathogens is available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
For more information, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health provides a list of potential tick identification and testing alternatives here.
