About the Integrated Pest Management Program

Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic science-based approach to pest management. Practicing IPM means combining a wide range of management tools (like pest monitoring, field design, crop planning, resistant plant varietes, biological control and diverse pesticides) in order to control crop pests while lowering costs and reducing pesticide risks to people and the environment. IPM techniques are used in agriculture and related industries (e.g., golf courses, sports turf, landscape and lawn maintenance, arboriculture, etc.).

At UMass, all of our Extension programs use IPM principles to advise farmers and guide research.
