Research Goals
Cranberry Station research efforts are focused on the cranberry crop system, its ecology and its interface with the environment. Our research programs emphasize a multidisciplinary team approach as well as the transfer of information from our research programs to cranberry growers and the community at large. We pride ourselves on being a model for the integration of research and extension. Therefore, we emphasize applied research and pursue basic research into areas where knowledge is needed to inform management recommendations. Below is a list of our primary focus areas.
Understanding the ecology of the cranberry production system
In this focus area we conduct research to further our understanding of pest behavior, distribution, and interaction with the crop; growth and physiology of the cranberry plants; and interactions among the components of the system. Some specific research areas include:
- epidemiology of diseases
- insect behavior
- basic biology of cranberry
- plant competition, reproduction, and invasiveness
- biological control of pests
- cultural management manipulations
- native pollinator habitat and biology
Understanding environmental interactions
This area of emphasis includes the interactions between the crop system and the environment from two points of view -- the effect of the crop system on the surrounding environment as well as the effect of the environment on the crop system. Some specific research areas include:
- weather and climate change
- water use efficiency
- response of cranberry to environmental stress
- nutrient management
- promoting environmental stewardship
- reduced-risk pesticides
- water quality
- frost management and hardiness
