Forty-three 4-H members, ages 12 to 16, came together June 23-25, 2013 on the UMass Amherst campus to explore science, engineering and technology. The camp kicked off with a Sunday night barbeque followed by a game of Minute-to-Win-It and a Clip-Mobile challenge. On Monday each 4-H member participated in an exciting workshop of his/her choice. "Solving Medical Mysteries" led participants through an exciting simulated forensic mystery led by Mark Kellogg and a team from Boston Childrens' Hospital. Dr. Katie Beltaire from UMass Amherst and two new Veterinary Science graduates facilitated a Veterinary Science workshop at the UMass Hadley Farm complex. In the third workshop, "Movie Making", Allison Butler from the UMass Amherst Department of Communications and one of her undergraduate students assisted the participants in the production of their own movies. On the final day of camp, 4-H'ers rotated through mini-workshops in the areas of food science, emergency animal response and endangered species. In addition, campers enjoyed award winning meals in the Worcester Dining Commons, had a taste of living in a college dormitory and met new 4-H members from across the state. Planning for next year's camp is already underway. Plan to be a part of it June 29 - July 1, 2014!
