UMass Extension's Garden Calendar

Cover of 2025 UMass Garden Calendar A renewal of a long-standing annual tradition… a useful, stimulating, and educational monthly wall calendar from UMass Extension.

Our Extension specialists have compiled the latest collection of uplifting images of garden and landscape plants well-suited for the Northeast. Each date features a timely, research-based tip such as when to fertilize, insect and disease alerts, or when to be especially tick-aware.

FEATURED ARTICLE: Backyard Apple Basics

Apples are among the most common tree fruits and are well-adapted to our local climate. For success in the home orchard, cover the basics! Plant at least two different compatible varieties near each other for cross pollination, fertilize annually to support new shoot growth and prune to promote proper tree structure, and choose resistant varieties to reduce disease problems; consider traps for insect pests.

Our 2025 calendar offers guidelines for proper pollination, effective pruning, how and when to fertilize, and pest management. We also include suggestions for apple varieties suited for the home orchard as well as an update on how planting sunflowers nearby can serve as a trap crop for pests and support for beneficial insects.
